by Jennifer Denevan Mail Staff Writer
Additional Chaffee County residents may be able save money with more energy efficient homes because the state Weatherization Assistance Program was recently expanded.
Money is from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act approved by Congress in February. It is administered by the Northwest Colorado Council of Governments.
The goal is to provide services to 10,000 homes in Colorado during 12 months.
Officials report guidelines were raised to include an income of $44,100 for a family of four.
Kathryn Wadsworth of Incite Consulting, said there is potential to help about 3,000 families in Chaffee County based upon income set by federal poverty level guidelines.
Renters may apply, she said, and although the homeowner needs to approve the application, it's based upon the renter's income.
There are limits, Wadsworth said. After someone has received services, they aren't eligible for more.
Families receiving help from programs such as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families or the Low income Energy Assistance Program may qualify for the weatherization program.
Weatherization means correcting inefficiencies such as windows sealed with duct tape, furnaces emitting carbon monoxide or related items to reducing heating costs.
Council of governments personnel report weatherization permanently reduces heating costs an average of 32 percent.
Weatherization begins with a residential property audit including health and safety. Improvements may include insulation, storm windows, caulking, weather stripping and in some cases, new energy-efficient furnaces and refrigerators.
