Crews work to open Independence Pass Colorado Department of Transportation personnel report they are on track to open Independence Pass, Colo. 82, by 2 p.m. today, the annual goal date.
They clear snow, sweep fallen rocks, fix guardrails and signs, patch potholes and more.
At 12,095 feet, Independence Pass is the highest paved Colorado highway crossing the Continental Divide.
Summit of the pass is 18 miles west of Twin Lakes and 19 miles east of Aspen.
The pass is popular for attractions including the ghost town of Independence, trailheads, campgrounds, scenic overlooks and wildlife viewing.
