Runner dies during competition

Jonathan Schwab - Mail Staff Writer

A runner competing in the Collegiate Peaks Trail Run near Buena Vista collapsed and died about 13 miles into the race Saturday.

John Marini, 59 of Littleton, collapsed while running and was found on the course by another runner, Chaffee County Chief Deputy Coroner Jeff Graf, reported.

Marini was pronounced dead at the scene after Chaffee County Emergency Medical Services personnel attempted to revive him with cardiopulmonary resuscitation, Graf said.

He said an autopsy will be performed today by a forensic pathologist in Colorado Springs to determine cause of death.

The race started and ended in downtown Buena Vista. It consisted of a 25-mile course or a 50-mile route. Marini was entered in the 25-mile competition and was about halfway through the course.
